DiamondView

Film thickness measurement of metal coated diamonds by means of optical methods

So far the thickness measurement of metal coatings at the nano scale was measured with SEM and TEM. Two very costly methods. With DiamondView the layer thickness measurement becomes simple and affordable.

DiamondView is used to measure the thickness of metal coatings below 100nm. Typical applications are synthetic diamonds and micro glass spheres (size range 80 to 1000 μm).

Measurement Principle

DiamondView-Measurement principle

The thickness of metal layers coated on transparent particles (e.g. diamonds or micro glass spheres) are measured using a high resolution scanner. The light transmission of the scanned particles is reduced as a function of the metal coating thickness. The scanner device is used as a transmission spectrometer.

The used scanner has a resolution of 4000dpi. This allows to measure the coating thickness of diamonds or glass spheres with a size range of 60- 1000 μm. An optical microscope in combination with a digital image camera is used for the thickness measurement of the coating of smaller diamonds or glass spheres with a size range of 6 -100 μm.

Results:

  • Thickness distribution
  • Single object evaluation
